 Welcome to the Education Department
The Education Department of the Atlanta Woman's Club focuses on projects raising awareness of adult and youth literacy and continuing education programs especially among women. We strongly believe that our Clubwomen are important fixtures in the community and are able to make an impact in two very important projects – Focus on Literacy and Education in the Community. If you have any questions or comments or would like to volunteer time to the Education Department, please contact Ruth Yurchuck, Education Department Chair at ry@abraxis.com.
Focus on Literacy
It is our goal to educate our members and others about rates of low literacy and stimulate citizen action to address impact and concern related to literacy (Adult, Family & Youth Literacy and Tutoring). We are committed in facilitating the development of a long lasting love for reading. We read to students, we tutor as well as striving to create and offer new and exciting programs to learn to read. Our Club also supports the work of Literacy Action Incorporated, a non-profit organization that provides undereducated adults literacy, life and work skills that empower them to reach their potential as self-sufficient individuals, parents, employees and citizens.
Education in the Community
Our Education in the Community Program encourages our club members to support programs that contribute to lifelong learning.
We promote and encourage our members to foster and support educational opportunities in their communities. From supporting local libraries to the pursuit of our members continued learning by participating in the Epsilon Sigma Omicron (ESO) program. Atlanta Woman’s Club members strongly believe in continuing self-education and awareness through literature and continuing education.
Epsilon Sigma Omicron (ESO)
Epsilon Sigma Omicron (ESO) is an honorary national educational society open to all members of the Atlanta Woman’s Club. Through ESO, clubwomen are given direction in planned reading for self-enrichment and personal growth.
ESO provides clubwomen with a structured reading program that is educational and stimulates a desire for self-improvement. ESO goals include:
• Encouraging clubwomen's pursuit of higher education • Creating an additional means to unite women in volunteerism • Developing a support network for women returning to school • Improving current and develop new study skills • Stimulating systematic home reading and study with minimal supervision • Encouraging the establishment of home libraries and greater use of public libraries • Encouraging the formation of reading/study/discussion groups
Any AWC member can participate in ESO as part of a reading group or on their own. The program provides membership, awards and certificates, pins, reading lists, and a framework in which to pursue continued self-improvement through reading.
Should you choose to participate in the ESC Program, attached please find an ESO form for your use. Please send your ESO form or submit a list of books that you have read to Cimi Douglass each month at our general AWC meeting or by email to cdouglass@balch.com. Ms. Douglass will collect all reading forms on a monthly or bi-annually basis in preparation of our Education Department’s Annual Report.
Again, if you would like to learn more about the Education Department of Atlanta Woman’s Club, volunteer time to this department or have any questions or comments, please contact Ruth Yurchuck, Education Department Chair at ry@abraxis.com.
